A day of love! And statistics…

February 14, 2025

As market researchers, any topic worth discussing is avidly thrown around the office and Valentine’s Day is no exception. As the day approached, we discussed who was celebrating, what they were doing and above all – new questions we could ask the population that have been previously unexplored.

Past surveys have shown that more than half of West Australians view the day as a waste of money, while only one in four actively enjoy celebrating it with a loved one. Over the years, we have examined topics such as love languages, favorite ways to spend the day, top romance movies, and gift ideas etc. This year, we asked n=1361 West Australians three simple questions and requested a funny Valentine’s Day story if they were willing to share.

Something fascinating we learnt this year is about the Valentine’s Day culture in Japan where Women present Men with a gift/token on the day, thereby setting the standard of present. If the men are into it, they reciprocate a month later on March 14th (White day). This sounds like a very safe and sensible approach to us!

OK, let’s get into it…

Which destination in WA would be your top choice for a romantic getaway?

No surprises here – with Margaret River, Yallingup and Dunsborough just a few short hours’ drive away, this region has romance written all over it. With a plethora of restaurants, cafes, wineries and beautiful views, you can’t go wrong with a weekend spent in this region.

Do you think Valentine’s Day promotes unhealthy relationship expectations?

Over the past few years, our surveys on Valentine’s Day have consistently shown that it is not widely celebrated with enthusiasm among West Australians. Additionally, when asked whether Valentine’s Day promotes unhealthy relationship expectations, 58% of men and 41% of women agreed that it does.

Would you be embarrassed to receive a gift of flowers at your office?

Absolutely ground-breaking research with this question. Data indicates that 58% of men would feel embarrassed receiving flowers at their workplace, compared to 36% of women. Conversely, this suggests that 42% of men and 64% of women would appreciate receiving flowers at work—an intriguing statistic that does beg the question – how many people have ever received flowers at their workplace? They might be missing out! Just a thought for next year…

And last but not least – our favourite Valentine’s Day stories from the panel.
