Love is in the air – or is it?

February 14, 2023

Today is Valentine’s Day (in case you needed the reminder…)! And while not everyone in the Painted Dog office loves the idea of a romantic day filled with love hearts and roses, others can’t get enough of it! So we decided to do what we do best, and put it to the people. Does WA get around Valentine’s Day – or is romance dead and is everyone cynical? We went out to a sample of n=1,373 West Aussies to find out!

First of all, we asked how people generally feel towards the day – and around half (47%) think it’s a total waste of money, increasing from last year’s result (36%)! However, 1 in 4 (26%) think it’s a good reason to celebrate with their loved ones. Exactly the same proportion (26%) thought it was a great excuse to celebrate in 2022.

When we asked how people ACTUALLY would like to celebrate the day, the results were even more clear. The most common response (29%) was that they don’t celebrate it at all and prefer to ignore the day completely! Although last year, 1 in 3 (34%) said they ignore the day completely – so maybe there are a few more romantics among us this year after all. The most common V Day plans are simple yet effective, with 18% saying that all they need to feel the love, is a thoughtful card or gesture.

While only 3% said they watch a movie with a tub of ice cream to celebrate the day, we were curious to know what flicks were at the top of people’s lists! Pretty Woman came in at the number one all-time favourite romantic movie, followed closely by Notting Hill and the Notebook. However, 1 in 4 (25%) said that rom coms weren’t their cup of tea….. who are these people?!

But what do you think? Are you a hopeless romantic or a cynic when it comes to Valentine’s Day? To have YOUR say and take part in our next poll, sign-up to RewardingViews:  https://www.rewardingviews.com.au

And lastly, whether you celebrate the day or not, Happy Valentine’s Day from the team at Painted Dog Research! x
