Be a Voice for Generations

June 2, 2023

Members of the Perth Painted Dog team were lucky enough to attend the Walk for Reconciliation at Kings Park (Kaarta Koomba) today. Starting with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, the team journeyed through Kings Park taking part in a range of cultural experiences and truth-telling and learnt more about The Voice.

This event is part of National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.

An important moment in the Reconciliation movement approaches as Australians prepare to head to the polls for a referendum about whether to change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

The Voice would be an independent and permanent advisory body. It would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It would not be a third chamber of Parliament, nor would it grant special rights to any group of Australians.

Find out more about the referendum through the Australian Government’s website: https://voice.gov.au

However you choose to vote, it’s important to remember that we are one community with a shared Australian identity.
